Massive Fire Near Heathrow Forces Runway Shuffle
Heathrow Switches Runways Amid Thick Smoke
A huge blaze has erupted close to Heathrow Airport, sending plumes of thick smoke into the sky. The airport has been forced to switch up its runway use to keep flights running smoothly.
Heathrow is now landing flights on the northern runway (27R) and launching departures from the southern runway (27L), an unusual shuffle caused by smoke drifting from a large field fire nearby.
A spokesperson said, “We have alternated our runways this afternoon due to an off-airport fire.”
Firefighters Battle Gigantic Blaze in Feltham
The inferno is raging across six hectares, engulfing fields, parkland, grassland, a cemetery, and an animal sanctuary near Feltham. Some 15 fire engines and roughly 100 firefighters are on the frontline, tackling the blaze.
The fire broke out shortly after 2.50pm. Crews from Feltham, Chiswick, Heathrow, Heston, and the surrounding area rushed to the scene. Surrey Fire Service has also lent a hand, sending 4×4 vehicles to assist.
Residents Urged to Keep Doors and Windows Shut
Station Commander Paul Casey, at the scene, warned locals, especially near Bedfont Sports Club: “The fire is spewing out a lot of smoke. Residents in the surrounding area should keep their windows and doors closed.”
Police have set up a large cordon to keep the public safe. Authorities say the cause of the fire remains unknown, and the blaze reportedly involves gas cylinders, raising fears of further danger.
Flights Continue as Usual Amid Fire Chaos
Despite the smoke and runway changes, Heathrow emphasised that there have been no flight delays or cancellations so far. Operations continue as normal for now.
