Local Hero Saves Five Bats Dumped on Busy A48 Road
Huw Jones had an unbelievable shock last Wednesday when he spotted a green sack on the road at the Maes Y Bont turn-off. Thinking it contained rubbish, he soon realised there was something much darker and furrier inside – bats!
Not One, But Five Bats Found Stuffed in Carrier Bags
At around 5.15pm, Jones spotted movement inside the sack. “I could very clearly see a bat inside and could not believe it,” he said.
What started as one bat soon revealed four more hidden in separate carrier bags inside the refuse sack. Three were female and two male.
Quick Thinking Saves Bats’ Lives
Jones took no chances. He carefully placed the bats into shoe boxes and kept them safe overnight in his garden shed before rushing them to a local vet. The RSPCA then took over their care.
“I’m so pleased to hear they’ve done well in the care of the RSPCA,” Jones said, who has two dogs and a cat at home.
RSPCA Launch Appeal Over Mysterious Bat Dumping
Inspector Keith Hogben and animal rescue officer Ellie West monitored the bats before releasing them safely back into the wild.
But questions remain. How did five bats end up locked inside carrier bags dumped by the roadside? Why would anyone do this?
Inspector Hogben said: “We’re so grateful to Mr Jones for his quick action and compassion. He certainly deserves a big ‘bat’ on the back!”
The RSPCA is now appealing for information. Anyone with details should contact their inspectorate appeal line on 0300 123 8018.
