Artist Sparks Outrage with “Katie Prices” Shopfront in Brighton

A daring new art stunt has Brighton buzzing. Artist Pattern Up has unveiled a shopfront on Gloucester Road named “Katie Prices” – a cheeky nod to celebrity Katie Price. But this is no ordinary tribute. It’s a sharp critique of society’s obsession with cosmetic surgery and the harsh judgments women face for going under the knife.

Why Katie Price?

Pattern Up, famed for pushing boundaries, revealed the thinking behind the stunt. “There’s a huge stigma against women who have cosmetic surgery, even though it’s becoming more accessible,” the artist said. “Katie Price has been vocal about how easy it is now to get these procedures.”

Choosing Price wasn’t random. The artist explained, “Katie has always spoken openly about cosmetic surgery accessibility. Yet, the media relentlessly pick apart her every choice, especially her looks and personal life.”

Class Prejudice Under the Spotlight

Pattern Up didn’t hold back on the media’s treatment of Price, calling it a “nasty classist prejudice aimed at working-class women who’ve turned their looks into celebrity.” The constant negative spotlight, they argue, sets unrealistic standards for women everywhere.

“The media expects women to be flawless 24/7. This pressure trickles down to younger women idolising celebrities who are airbrushed beyond recognition,” Pattern Up said. “It leaves women feeling inadequate and pushes them towards cosmetic surgery to ‘fix’ themselves.”

A Future Where Surgery Is as Common as Ciggies?

Pattern Up’s bold prediction? Cosmetic surgery could soon become as routine as buying cigarettes. “In future, surgery might be just part of everyday life,” they said.

The installation has divided opinion. Some hail it as a powerful social commentary; others slam it as insensitive to Katie Price herself. One thing’s clear: it’s sparked a fiery debate on the pressures women face under the public gaze.
