Tax Deadline Panic: Nearly 1 Million File at Last Minute
On 31 January, a whopping 861,085 taxpayers rushed online to beat the Self Assessment deadline. With just minutes to spare, 36,767 filed in the frantic final hour. The filing frenzy peaked between 4 and 5pm, when 68,462 returns flooded in.
Millions Expected to File: HMRC Sounds Warning
More than 12 million Brits were expected to submit their tax returns for 2021-2022. HMRC is now urging anyone who missed the deadline to file immediately. Delay any longer, and they risk hefty penalties.
Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC’s Director General for Customer Services, said:
“Thank you to the millions of customers and agents who got their tax returns in on time. Customers who have yet to file, and who are concerned that they will not be able to pay in full, may be able to spread the cost of what they owe with a payment plan.
