Yellow Warning as Kent Braces for Snow and Ice
The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for Kent, sparking concerns over up to 10cm of snow across the region this weekend. The alert, updated this morning, now states that snow and ice are no longer expected until 6pm on Sunday—but the threat isn’t over yet.
Heavy Snow Hits Kent’s High Grounds
Forecasters predict around 5cm of snow will fall widely across Kent, with some areas potentially getting double that. The North Downs—from Farnham in Surrey to Dover, including Sevenoaks, Gillingham, and Aylesford—could see significant snowfall. The High Weald area faces the heaviest blast, expecting up to 10cm.
Travel Chaos and Safety Risks Loom
- Road travel could face delays due to stranded vehicles and icy conditions.
- Air travel might suffer cancellations and postponements.
- Rural communities may become cut off as untreated pavements and cycle paths turn slippery and impassable.
- Power outages and mobile phone disruptions are possible.
- Injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces are likely.
Experts Warn of Freezing Fog and Sleet
Ice is also likely to form on untreated surfaces, particularly near coasts where rain or sleet is more likely,” said a Met Office spokesman. “There is still a risk of freezing fog in places, especially southern England, during Sunday and Monday mornings.” “On Sunday, a band of sleet or snow might move into the far south-east, causing disruption during rush hour on Monday. An alert has been issued.”
Earlier this week, a level three health warning was issued as temperatures dipped to -10°C in parts of the UK. While confidence remains low, residents should prepare for worsening conditions and keep an eye out for updates.
