Heavy rain alert! The Met Office has issued an Amber warning for south Wales on Monday as relentless downpours gear up to soak the region. Get ready for a soggy start to the week with widespread flooding and travel chaos on the cards.
England Takes a Soaking Before Wales Gets Slammed
Eastern England is already under a yellow rain warning this Saturday, suffering persistent showers that won’t ease off. Northern England faces a frosty threat overnight as wet roads ramp up icy conditions, triggering another yellow warning for Sunday morning.
Sunday offers only a brief dry window before the skies crack open again overnight, setting the scene for a wet and wild start to the week.
Amber Alert in South Wales: Torrential Rain and Fierce Winds
The worst hits late Sunday, smashing into Monday with heavy rain drenching south Wales non-stop. The Amber warning kicks in early Sunday hours and stays in force until early Tuesday.
Met Office Deputy Chief Forecaster Mike Silverstone warns: “Heavy rain will move over south Wales from late Sunday and through Monday. Rainfall will vary, but the highest grounds could see 100-120mm in a single day. Hills in the Amber zone are likely to get 60-80mm, while lowlands might see 20-40mm.”
Yellow warnings also blanket the southwest and northwest of England, plus central and northern Wales—disruptions likely. The Met Office urges everyone to stay vigilant.
Flooding, travel chaos, and power cuts loom as floodwaters run dangerously fast and deep, especially in the Amber zones.
Natural Resources Wales Issues Flood Warning
Richard Preece of Natural Resources Wales says: “Heavy rain overnight Sunday into Monday puts parts of South Wales at serious flood risk. Rivers are swollen and grounds saturated. Expect multiple flood alerts and warnings.”
“Surface water flooding will cause problems too. Residents should prepare now by checking flood risk zones and signing up for free flood alerts online.”
“Never drive or walk through floodwaters—hidden dangers lurk beneath,” Preece cautioned.
He also urges locals to assemble flood kits, protect important documents and meds, move vehicles to higher ground, and elevate treasured belongings.
