Aviva Pulls Out of Norwich Pride After Activist Pressure

Insurance giant Aviva has stunned Norwich Pride by pulling their sponsorship just days before the event. The firm, a key backer since 2022 and supporter since 2016, bowed out following fierce pressure from activist groups including Norwich Trans Pride.

Trans Group Targets Aviva’s Ties to Controversial Investments

Norwich Trans Pride sparked outrage by exposing Aviva’s investments in Barclays. Barclays is linked to defence contractors supplying arms to Israel and to fossil fuel firms, sparking ethical concerns amid the ongoing Gaza conflict. Their demands for Aviva to cut ties put enormous heat on the insurer.

Barclays itself recently faced backlash, losing sponsors at major UK festivals like Latitude, Isle of Wight, and Download.

Safety Concerns or PR Nightmare? Aviva Explains U-Turn

Aviva cited “safety of our people at the event” as the reason for quitting the sponsorship. A company spokesperson expressed regret but stressed Aviva’s continued support for Pride and workplace inclusivity:

“This is very disappointing but we remain committed to the Pride agenda and, together with our Pride Community, will continue the important work we do at Aviva to make our workplace even more inclusive.”

Mixed Reactions as Norwich Pride and Trans Group Respond

Norwich Pride confirmed the sponsorship split on their website but refused further comment. Norwich Trans Pride welcomed the news, stating on Facebook that their concerns had been “acknowledged and acted upon” by organisers.

This drama highlights the tightrope walk companies face balancing sponsorships, community values, and global political issues in today’s fraught climate.
