Sunlight Sparks Blaze on Dorset Crescent, Basingstoke
A blazing fire ripped through two homes on Dorset Crescent in Basingstoke after sunlight was magnified by a glass object, firefighters revealed.
The blaze broke out around 4pm on Saturday. Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service rushed to tackle what began as a fence fire before it quickly engulfed neighbouring properties.
Rapid Response Beats the Flames
Basingstoke fire crews sprang into action, donning breathing apparatus and using hose reel jets to douse the flames and stop the fire from spreading further.
After knocking down the blaze, firefighters deployed ventilation fans to clear smoke from the homes.
Crews stayed on site until about 6pm, conducting home fire safety visits in the area before heading back to the station.
Firefighters Warn: Keep Glass Out of the Sun
“This incident serves as a vital reminder to keep glass ornaments and mirrors out of direct sunlight, particularly during periods of hot weather,”
a fire service spokesperson said.
“Glass objects can magnify and refract sunlight, creating intense heat and increasing the risk of accidental fires in or around your property.”
Thankfully, no injuries were reported. But residents are urged to double-check fire safety measures as hot weather continues.
