Huw Edwards Raked in Nearly Half a Million Before BBC Exit
Huw Edwards, the BBC’s trusted news anchor, pocketed a whopping £475,000+ in the 2023/24 financial year before his shock departure this April. His exit came amid a scandal involving inappropriate photos and a young person, which rocked the broadcasting world.
Pay Rise Despite Less On-Air Time
The BBC’s latest annual report reveals Edwards earned between £475,000 and £479,999 for 160 days of presenting major news specials and election coverage. This was a noticeable jump from the previous year’s £435,000-£439,999 for 180 days’ work. Despite fewer days on air, his pay went up.
Scandal, Suspension and Mental Health Struggles
Edwards’ career came to an abrupt halt in July 2023 amid serious allegations. Suspended but still on the payroll, Edwards battled mental health issues and received in-patient care during this tough period. The BBC confirmed he left without a severance package, following medical advice from his healthcare team.
He was a key BBC figure during historic moments like the announcement and funeral coverage of Queen Elizabeth II.
BBC Defends Pay, Top Earners Revealed
BBC Director-General Tim Davie defended the pay rise, stressing careful spending of public funds and a measured response to Edwards’ situation. Edwards ranked as the corporation’s third highest-paid employee, trailing only Gary Lineker whose salary topped £1.35 million for the seventh year running.
Salary Transparency Spurs Debate
The BBC’s salary disclosures continue to spark controversy over public money usage. The report also highlighted gaps, noting several top stars’ pay remains hidden due to payment via production companies. This year’s report drops only brief mentions of the hit show Strictly Come Dancing, despite ongoing criticism over its treatment of contestants and internal culture.
