Police have identified the body found on Southport Beach as George Norwell, the 77-year-old reported missing from Preston. The grim discovery ends a desperate search that gripped the community.
Desperate Hunt After George Vanishes
George was last spotted by family at 9.30am on Saturday, 4th October, in Whittle-le-Woods. His blue Ford Focus was abandoned near the River Ribble in Preston just an hour later. But George had disappeared without a trace.
Lancashire Police, Fire and Rescue teams, and HM Coast Guard launched a large-scale search operation to find the missing pensioner.
Heartbreaking Confirmation from Police
On Monday morning, Merseyside Police found a man’s body washed ashore on Southport Beach. After forensic checks, officers confirmed the remains were George’s.
“This is not the outcome that anyone wanted, and our thoughts are with George’s family at this distressing time,” said a Lancashire Police spokesperson.
George’s family has been informed and is now receiving support in their time of grief.
