Dramatic Sea Rescue Off Brighton Beach
Fabian Bull and Edward Sansom, Seafront Officers, sprang into action this week to save a swimmer caught in trouble off Brighton beach.
Swimmer Trapped by Ruthless Rip Currents
The swimmer struggled as fierce tides and crashing waves made escape impossible. Swept east by the relentless tide, they became stuck in a rip current near a concrete groyne with no way out.
Patrolling the beach, the officers spotted the swimmer fighting to stay afloat—then suddenly disappearing beneath the water.
Heroic Rescue and Full Recovery
Quick-thinking Bull and Sansom dived in and pulled the casualty to safety. The swimmer was treated for shock and concussion and has since made a full recovery.
Without the officers’ quick intervention, this could have ended much worse.
Seafront Team Issues Safety Warning
“Yesterday was a stark reminder of the dangers swimmers face in open water,” the team said. “Even skilled swimmers can be caught out by shifting tides and hidden rip currents. Add falling sea temperatures, and cold-water shock becomes a real threat. Swimmers must stay aware, especially during colder months.”
The Brighton & Hove Seafront Team urges sea swimmers to:
- Check conditions before you swim and never go solo.
- Wear a wetsuit and swim cap for safety.
- Stay within your depth and swim parallel to the shore.
“We love seeing sea swimmers enjoying our beaches year-round,” the team added. “But safety is our number one priority. We want everyone to have a safe, positive experience.”
