Candle Blaze Sparks Bedroom Fire in Maidstone Home
Kent Fire and Rescue Service rushed to a Maidstone house after a candle sparked a bedroom fire on Old School Lane. The homeowner was cooking dinner when she noticed smoke but quickly realised it wasn’t from the stove.
Candle Causes Chaos
Investigating the source, she found a fire blazing on a chest of drawers in a bedroom. Luckily, the bedroom door was closed, sparking a crucial barrier that contained the flames.
Firefighters Spring Into Action
Two fire engines arrived swiftly, with crews in breathing apparatus tackling the flames using a hose reel jet. They deployed a high-pressure fan to clear smoke from the building, preventing further damage.
No Injuries, But Caution Urged
Thankfully, no-one was hurt. Leanne McMahon, KFRS Group Manager for Community Safety, issued a stern warning:
“Lots of people enjoy lighting candles at home, but it’s vital to use them with care. Always place candles in holders on non-flammable surfaces and never leave them unattended—especially if you have young children or pets around. Keep candles away from curtains, bedding, clothes, and plants that could easily catch fire.”
This close call is a sharp reminder to handle candles with extreme caution and prevent fires before they start.
