Chunky SUVs to Pay Hefty New Parking Surcharge in Cardiff
Cardiff Council is cracking down hard on bulky SUVs. From now on, owners of heavy hitters tipping the scales over 2,400kg—think Range Rovers and similar gas-guzzlers—will face a steep new parking surcharge. The move targets their “more polluting, more expensive and more dangerous” reputation, according to a recent council report.
Why the New Charge? Cardiff Calls Out Big SUVs
Cardiff’s blunt report slams oversized SUVs as a double threat: a danger on the roads and a menace to the environment. The council flagged higher carbon emissions, worsening air quality, thicker congestion, and increased road risks due to these motor giants.
The surcharge is designed to make drivers think twice before dominating city streets with these lumbering beasts. Simply put: the bigger your ride, the bigger your bill.
Politicians and Campaigners Clash Over ‘SUV Tax’
The backlash was swift. Conservative Senedd member Andrew RT Davies branded the charge as a blatant “SUV tax” and slammed it as Labour’s latest “war on motorists.” He blasted the policy for proving just how “out of touch” the politicians really are.
Reform UK Wales piled on, calling the new rules a misery for drivers and promising to fight back against Cardiff’s “war on motorists” and the capricious 20mph zones.
On the flip side, Oliver Lord from Clean Cities backed Cardiff’s bold step. He said: “It’s only fair those driving the biggest, heaviest and most polluting cars pay extra for the space and danger they bring. This is common sense and might just set a trend for other cities.”
What’s Next? The Cost and Cardiff’s Road to Cleaner Streets
The council hasn’t nailed down exactly how much more SUV owners will have to fork out. For context, regular parking permits run at £35 a year for the first car, £90 for the second.
Dan De’Ath, Cardiff’s cabinet member, admitted some neighbourhoods are “absolutely saturated with cars,” with vehicles blocking pavements and causing standstill traffic.
This new policy aims to cut congestion and lift air quality, marking the first time a UK city council has formally voted to charge big vehicles extra for parking. Could this be the end of the SUV takeover on Britain’s roads? Cardiff is betting on it.
