British Ambassador Parties for King Charles III’s Coronation in Beirut
The British Ambassador to Lebanon, Hamish Cowell CMG, threw a star-studded bash to celebrate the Coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla. The lavish event took place on Wednesday 10 May in the stunning Sursock Palace Gardens, Beirut.
Fusion of British and Lebanese Talent Lights Up the Night
The evening was a cultural extravaganza. Lebanese music maestro Guy Manoukian treated guests to a unique mix of British and Lebanese tunes. Flying in from the UK, the Royal Academy of Music’s Kyan String Quartet added classical flair. Meanwhile, British artist Tom Young showcased powerful artwork highlighting historic Anglo-Lebanese ties around Lebanon’s 1943 independence.
Food, Diplomats, and a Powerful Message
- Guests feasted on British classics like Fish & Chips and Coronation Chicken alongside regional favourites by Soufra, the famed local kitchen.
- The ceremony was graced by top Lebanese officials, including Fadi Alameh MP and Environment Minister Nasser Yassin, representing key political figures.
- Business leaders, military officials, and media personalities also joined in the celebrations.
Ambassador Speaks Out on Lebanon’s Future
“The restoration of Sursock Palace symbolizes Beirut’s renewal. But rebuilding is about more than bricks—it’s about restoring trust in state institutions,” said Ambassador Cowell.
He added, “His Majesty’s promise to serve is vital for Lebanon, a country facing many crises. I salute those dedicating themselves to public service despite immense challenges.”
The ambassador also posed a tough question: “Why does Lebanon, with its incredible talent and spirit, still need international aid three years after its economic collapse?”
He concluded with a plea: “Lebanon’s leaders must urgently unite and drive reforms. The UK and other friends stand ready to help, but change must come from within.”
Honouring a Fallen Hero and Supporting Vulnerable Women
Guests were invited to support the ‘’Becky’s Button’’ campaign, commemorating Rebecca Dykes, a beloved embassy staffer tragically killed in 2017. The campaign provides safety alarms to vulnerable women across Lebanon.
In a heartwarming move, leftover food was donated to families in need via Lebanese charity Food Blessed.
