Metro Legend Richard Neesham Retires After 41 Years Behind the Controls

Richard Neesham has called time on an astonishing 41-year career driving Metro trains across Tyneside. Starting shortly after the Metro network launched in 1981, the Fawdon native is the oldest and longest-serving driver on the system.

From Bus Driver to Metro Pioneer

Before jumping aboard the Metro, Richard spent a decade driving buses. When the shiny new Metro trains rolled out in the early 80s, he saw an opportunity and took it. He never looked back.

“I love my job, and I’m going to miss it a lot,” Richard said. “After 41 years, I was emotional on my last day. The team gave me a fantastic send-off.”

Richard remembers the excitement of the Metro’s early days. It was like the London Underground for Tyneside—a whole new, speedy way for people to travel. Being part of that revolution made this the best career choice.”

Rain, Shine or 3am Starts—Nothing Stopped Him

Despite early morning shifts and chilly winters, Richard thrived. “Even waking up at 3am became something I looked forward to,” he revealed.

Over four decades, he’s ferried millions of passengers across the region. With so few original drivers left, Richard’s dedication stands out.

Farewell to a Public Transport Icon

Metro Operations Director John Alexander paid tribute, saying:

“Richard’s 41 years of service is nothing short of outstanding. Still driving at age 75 shows his commitment. He’s a much-loved team member and will be greatly missed.”

Richard looks forward to retirement and spending more time with family. He’s also excited to return next year for the launch of the brand-new Metro trains.

Here’s to Richard Neesham—a true Tyne and Wear transport legend.
