17,000 Women’s Cervical Screening Records Under Review in Northern Ireland
The Southern Health and Social Care Trust has launched a major review of around 17,000 women’s cervical smear test records. This follows serious concerns flagged by senior lab staff about the Trust’s cervical screening service.
Independent Report Sparks Urgent Action
The Trust called in experts from the Royal College of Pathologists (RCPath Consulting) to conduct an independent investigation. The recent RCPath Risk Assessment Report found that while most negative smear results were accurate, a significant number of women might have received false negatives—results other labs would have flagged as potentially abnormal.
To be safe, the Southern Trust is double-checking women’s records. In most cases, they will review the stored smears again. Some women may be asked to come back for another smear test. Personal letters are being sent to those affected, explaining what happens next.
No Letter? No Panic
If you haven’t received a letter, don’t call your GP unless you’ve just been invited for routine screening. The Trust reassures women that regular appointments remain key and urges them to attend their scheduled cervical screenings.
Trust Apologises, Pledges Improvements
“We deeply regret the situation and are committed to putting it right,”
said Dr. Stephen Austin, Medical Director for the Southern Trust.
The Trust is working closely with the Public Health Agency (PHA) and Department of Health to follow all RCPath recommendations. Most have already been put in place, with the rest underway.

Dr. Joanne McClean, PHA’s Director of Public Health, reminded women that cervical screening helps spot early changes before cancer develops. She urged eligible women to keep attending appointments and to see a GP if they experience symptoms like abnormal bleeding or pelvic pain.
