Chelsea Hits Premier League Probe Over Abramovich Era Finances
Chelsea Football Club is under the spotlight as the Premier League launches an investigation into possible financial rule breaches during Roman Abramovich’s ownership. The inquiry comes after the Blues were taken over last summer by a US-led consortium.
New Owners Blow Whistle on Own Club
The new bosses, including Californian firm Clearlake Capital and LA Dodgers co-owner Todd Boehly, took the unusual step of reporting Chelsea themselves to UEFA and the Premier League after sealing the £4.25 billion takeover.
So far, Chelsea face no formal charges, but the probe aims to uncover whether any financial irregularities or breaches of Premier League regulations happened under Abramovich’s 19-year reign.
Big Fines and Point Deductions Could Loom
If found guilty, Chelsea risk big penalties such as hefty fines or even a points deduction – a potential nightmare for the London club. The investigation puts a spotlight on the club’s financial dealings and compliance with league rules.
Adding fuel to the fire, UEFA recently slapped Chelsea with a €10 million (£8.6 million) fine for submitting “incomplete financial information” from 2012 to 2019.
Abramovich Era Ends Amid Sanctions and Controversy
Roman Abramovich’s tenure ended in May 2022 amid UK government sanctions linked to his ties with Vladimir Putin following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Despite major trophies won on the pitch, the political fallout forced the billionaire to sell Chelsea.
The US consortium’s takeover marks a fresh chapter for the club. But with the Premier League’s investigation underway, Chelsea’s future faces uncertainty as potential financial missteps are unraveled.
