Tyne and Wear Fire Chief Set to Retire After 26 Years
Fire chief Chris Lowther has announced he will retire this year after a remarkable 26-year career protecting communities across Tyne and Wear.
From Firefighter to Chief Fire Officer
Chris joined the Fire Service in 1997, steadily climbing the ranks before taking the top job in 2017. Born and bred in Gateshead, he has dedicated his entire career to the region, also serving in key national roles with the National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC).
A Proud Career and Bright Future
“It has been the privilege of my life to be Chief Fire Officer of Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service,” said Chris.
“I firmly believe this is the best Fire and Rescue Service in the country, and that’s down to the incredible people who work here. Their commitment to building the safest community is clear every day.”
“I will never forget my early days on station as a firefighter—that’s what I loved to do. I was born in Gateshead, grew up in Gateshead, and started my career here. I love this region and this Service.”
“This career has given me friends for life and countless opportunities to connect with the people of Tyne and Wear. The staff here are passionate and deeply care about our communities.”
“I will support the Fire Authority in appointing my successor, and I know the future of Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service is bright.”
Looking Ahead: Succession Plans Underway
Chris will stay on until a new Chief Fire Officer is appointed and a smooth handover is completed. The search for his replacement is already underway, with an announcement expected in May.
His leadership will be greatly missed by both the Fire Service team and the local communities he has served so loyally for over two decades.
