Calling All Young Writers: Kent’s Big Writing Challenge Kicks Off!
Kent County Council’s Reconnect programme, teaming up with the KM Charity Team, has launched an exciting new competition celebrating “local heroes”. Kids and teens across Kent are invited to get creative and enter!
Who Can Enter? What’s the Theme?
- Open to children and young people who live or attend school in Kent.
- Three age categories: Key Stage 1 (Years 1-2), Key Stage 2 (Years 3-6), and Key Stages 3 & 4 (Years 7-11).
- Entries must focus on “local heroes” and be no longer than 500 words.
Formats accepted include short stories, poems, plays, essays, or even sound recordings. The deadline to send in entries is 31 May.
Top Prizes and Star-Studded Awards
Award-winning children’s author Nick Butterworth, famous for the lovable Percy the Park Keeper series, will be at the glitzy awards event. All winners get a framed certificate and a commemorative book.
The overall winners will scoop a bespoke glass trophy and KCC is funding special trips for their entire classes. A dream come true for young storytellers!

How to Enter
The competition is funded by the Reconnect programme, which aims to help kids catch up on experiences missed during the Covid-19 pandemic. The KM Charity Team handles entries, judging, and organising the awards.
