Coach Crashes into Traffic Lights in Sandown After Swerving to Avoid Cyclist
An empty coach crashed into a set of traffic lights in Sandown, Isle of Wight, this afternoon after trying to dodge a cyclist.
Crash After Dropping Off at Local Hotel
The coach had just dropped passengers off at a hotel in Sandown and was turning from Royal Street into Broadway near the Heights Leisure Centre around 4.20pm.
In an effort to avoid hitting a cyclist, the driver swerved sharply and slammed into the traffic lights, causing significant damage.
Traffic Chaos and Glass Hazards
Hampshire Police are on scene managing traffic as several traffic lights have been knocked out, causing delays in the area. Officers are also dealing with broken glass scattered across the road, posing safety risks to drivers and pedestrians.
Driver’s Dodgy Maneuver Sparks Criticism
The coach, owned by Davey Travel, claims the driver had to take evasive action to avoid the cyclist. However, bystanders were less forgiving.
- Eyewitnesses say the driver showed poor control, struggling to turn from Grafton Street into Leed Street, even reversing back after multiple failed attempts.
- One onlooker joked, “I thought he got his license in a raffle!”
Local Witness Speaks Out
“He took the wrong lane coming up from Sandown town and tried to turn right and took the light out with him. It was his mistake, no one else’s. I saw it all happen,” said Andrea Wade.
Police continue to investigate the incident while traffic disruption remains in the area.
