Sting in the Sea: Man Gets Jabbed by Venomous Compass Jellyfish off Kemp Town
Kevin Pope had a shock to his system on Friday morning when he spotted a rare compass jellyfish while swimming near Kemp Town. These striking sea creatures, marked with brown patterns like a compass rose, pack a venomous sting that can cause serious discomfort.
Venomous Sting Warned by Wildlife Experts
The Wildlife Trusts alerted the public that compass jellyfish stings aren’t over even if the creature is gone. Their detached tentacles can still sting independently, meaning a single encounter could lead to multiple painful jabs.
Kevin’s Close Call Under The Waves
Kevin described the sting as “similar to a nettle sting” after the jellyfish hit his leg. “This one actually stung me on the leg,” he told us, highlighting the uncomfortable surprise swimmers face with these venomous visitors.
Swimmers off Kemp Town are urged to stay vigilant and steer clear of these pretty but painful jellyfish.
