Drama at Seven Sisters: Dog Owners Rescued by Coastguard After Tide Cuts Off Escape
Cliff-Edge Chaos at Hope Gap
Two dog owners faced a terrifying ordeal on Saturday afternoon (23 August) at Hope Gap, near the famous Seven Sisters cliffs. Their beloved dog fell from the cliffs just after 1pm, prompting the owners to scramble down the dangerous cliff face to save it.
Tide Turns Terrifying
The rescue attempt quickly turned into a life-threatening situation when the incoming tide trapped the couple on rocks with rising water closing in. Stranded and desperate, they had nowhere to go.
Coastguard to the Rescue
A passing boat spotted the stranded pair and dialled 999, alerting the Coastguard. Newhaven RNLI lifeboat and Birling Gap Coastguard Rescue Team raced to the scene. The lifeboat crew pulled the owners to safety, while Coastguard officers gave them essential safety advice after the harrowing rescue. Thankfully, neither suffered injuries.
Coastguard’s Stark Warning
HM Coastguard has slammed dangerous dog-walking habits near cliffs and issued a strict warning:
“Always keep your dog on a lead when visiting the coast. They are easily distracted by smells and sounds which could lead them to fall from the cliff edge. If your dog does get into trouble at the coast, do not attempt to rescue them yourself. Instead, stay in a safe place so Coastguard Rescue Teams can locate you.”
This close call is a stark reminder as thousands flock to Sussex’s scenic but perilous coastline over the summer holidays. Stay safe, keep your pooch on a lead, and leave rescues to the professionals.
