Cat Owners Face £500 Fine as Microchipping Deadline Looms
Cat owners across the UK have less than three months to microchip their pets or risk a whopping £500 fine. New government rules make microchipping all pet cats mandatory by summer 2024, with the deadline set for June 10.
Microchipping: The New Must-Have for Cats
This follows the successful rollout of compulsory microchipping for dogs since April 2016 across England, Scotland, and Wales. The push for cat microchipping was led by animal welfare champions at Mayhew Animal Home.
Mayhew reports there are over 11 million pet cats in the UK, many still unchipped. From June, owners must register their cats on an official database by the time the feline is 20 weeks old. Ignoring this will trigger fines up to £500, though owners get a 21-day grace period to fix the issue.
Indoor Cats Not Exempt – Safety Matters
The new law covers all cats, indoors or out. Mayhew warns that even indoor cats can slip out through open doors or windows, putting them at risk of getting lost. Microchipping massively boosts the chance of reuniting lost cats with their owners.

The procedure is simple and affordable, costing between £10 and £30 from vets or trained professionals. Chief Veterinary Officer Christine Middlemiss praised microchipping as one of the best ways to protect pets and keep them safe.
