Crackdown on Illegal Vapes in Brighton & Hove
Brighton & Hove Council’s Trading Standards officers have launched a tough new campaign targeting illegal vapes and e-cigarettes. Recent raids on local shops uncovered a stash of around 1,000 banned disposable vapes, along with £2,500 worth of illicit tobacco.
Dangerous Chemicals Lurking in Black Market Vapes
Illicit vaping products often contain toxic substances like lead, tin, nickel, and harmful cannabis-derived THC chemicals. High lead exposure can seriously damage the central nervous system and stunt brain development, especially in children and teens.
Oversized Vapes Pack a Heavy Nicotine Punch
Most seized illegal disposables had huge tanks delivering between 3,500 and 9,000 puffs. For context, one cigarette equals about 12.5 puffs, so a 3,500-puff vape equals roughly 280 cigarettes of nicotine. UK law limits disposable e-cigs to 2% nicotine and 2ml capacity — roughly 600 puffs — to keep users safe.
Council Warns Retailers: Play by the Rules or Face Fines
Brighton & Hove’s Councillor Tim Rowkins slammed local businesses selling dodgy vapes, calling it a threat to public health. Retailers are reminded they must only sell vaping products that meet strict UK regulations and are banned from selling to under-18s. Both shop owners and staff can be prosecuted for underage sales.
