Bag Snatcher Daryl Munro Jailed for Brutal Spree on Elderly Women
Seven Women Targeted in Shocking Crime Wave
Daryl Munro has been locked up for four years after terrorising elderly women across Basildon, Pitsea, and Laindon last August. The ruthless 28-year-old struck between 7 August and 19 August, targeting seven women in a series of violent snatch-and-run attacks.
Violent Attacks Leave Victims Injured and Shaken
In one chilling incident, Munro grabbed a 75-year-old woman’s handbag while cycling past, violently throwing her to the ground and leaving her with cuts and bruises. Just three days later, he knocked the walking stick from a 78-year-old woman’s hands then snatched her bag as she struggled to keep her balance.
His brutality didn’t stop there. Munro pushed a 50-year-old woman backwards, causing her to hit her head on the pavement before stealing her bag. He even pawned her mobile the very next day for £130.
Another victim, a 64-year-old woman, was pushed to the ground just a week before, losing cash and bank cards as Munro cycled off with the loot.
Quick Police Work and Public Help Bring Munro to Justice
Munro stole from four women, snatched bags from two more, and made an attempted theft on a seventh. Police ramped up patrols and released CCTV images of the suspect, which led to members of the public identifying him. He was arrested shortly after.
Munro’s criminal record also includes a March burglary in Vange where he stole bank cards, later used fraudulently, and driving an Audi A4 while disqualified and uninsured, despite denying the theft of the car.
Munro Admits to Multiple Charges and Is Sentenced
The Basildon local pleaded guilty to five robberies, two frauds, two thefts, an attempted theft, burglary, driving while disqualified, breaching a suspended sentence, and driving without insurance at Basildon Crown Court on 19 October. The judge sentenced him immediately to four years behind bars.
PC Alex Franklin said: “Munro targeted women who were walking alone and used physical violence against them. It was calculated, callous and could easily have led to someone being seriously injured.
“He has left the victims feeling anxious and scared. No-one should ever feel unsafe going about their daily lives, and I hope they will feel safer now he’s in jail.
“I’d also like to thank members of the public for helping us catch Munro. Information from the community is always vital to help us catch criminals and continue to keep our district safe, and we really do appreciate your continued help and support.”
