Kent Launches Reuse Container to Save Good Furniture from Landfill
Got furniture that’s too good to toss? Kent residents can now give unwanted chairs, tables, wardrobes, and bookcases a fresh start thanks to a new ‘reuse container’ scheme at the Tovil Household Waste Recycling Centre.
Furniture Reuse Scheme Backed by Charity and Council
The initiative is a joint effort by Kent County Council (KCC), managed by Commercial Services Group, and local charity Making a Difference to Maidstone (MADM).
The container opened this week for a six-month trial. Residents can drop off reusable furniture, which MADM sells in their shops to fund outreach projects or donates to locals in crisis.
Charity Support with a Heart
MADM supports people referred by social services, housing associations, police, probation, and more. They provide furniture, advocacy, volunteering opportunities, and practical help to those in need.
KCC’s Environment Cabinet Member Susan Carey said: “This trial has multiple benefits. It gives furniture a second life, reduces waste, and supports a brilliant cause. We’re excited to partner with MADM at the Tovil site. If you can’t bring your furniture, MADM might even collect it for reuse.”
MADM founder Amanda Sidwell added: “We’re proud to partner with KCC and the community to make a real difference.”
How to Take Part
- Bring reusable furniture to the Tovil HWRC reuse container.
- Book your visit online in advance at www.kent.gov.uk/waste.
- If you’re unable to transport items, MADM may offer collection.
This is just the beginning. KCC plans more reuse initiatives across its recycling centres soon. Stay tuned for more ways to reduce waste and help local causes.
