A dramatic car fire sent huge plumes of thick smoke billowing over the M27 today, sparking fears the flames might spread to nearby trees. The blaze has forced the closure of two lanes, causing traffic chaos with cars backing up along the motorway.

The fire broke out between Junction 10 and Junction 9 near Fareham. Hampshire Fire and Rescue crews, stationed at Fareham, rushed to the scene to wrestle the inferno. Black and grey smoke clouded both carriageways, with the car itself almost unrecognisable in the flames.
Firefighters Battle Flames Amid Traffic
Fire crews tackled the intense blaze using two hose reels and breathing apparatus as vehicles continued to pass on the westbound side. Some drivers feared the fire had spread to a nearby field, adding to concerns of a wider fire emergency.
Officials are continuing their efforts to bring the blaze under control, with roads expected to remain affected for some time.
