Chaos on the M27: Multi-Vehicle Crash Shuts Hampshire Motorway
A horror crash involving eight vehicles has shut the M27 near Whiteley tonight. The busy motorway junction nine was blocked after the smash just after 9.30pm on Sunday, sparking a huge emergency response.
Trapped Driver Freed After Hour-Long Rescue
Fire crews from three areas raced to the scene. One driver was trapped by his legs inside his wrecked car and had to be cut out. The rescue took around 60 minutes as firefighters battled to free him safely.
A Hampshire Fire and Rescue spokeswoman said: “The driver, believed to be middle-aged, was given emergency treatment at the scene alongside the police. Once stabilised, he was rushed to QA Hospital in Cosham for further care.”
Motorway Closed Both Ways, Air Ambulance Grounded
With the motorway shut in both directions, traffic chaos ensued. There were calls for an air ambulance, but bad weather stopped it from landing. Two ambulances, a rapid response vehicle, and a paramedic officer were on site.
Delays Expected Until After 1am
The Highways Agency warns that the eastbound carriageway won’t fully reopen until just after 1am Monday morning. Motorists should brace for long delays tonight.
