Big Boost This Winter: DWP Christmas Bonus and £300 Cost-of-Living Payment Incoming
As autumn bites, millions of UK households on Universal Credit and other benefits are set to receive a hefty £300 cost-of-living payment. But that’s not all – the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has also confirmed a festive £10 Christmas bonus for eligible recipients this winter. It’s a small but welcome financial boost just in time for the holidays.
Who Qualifies for the DWP Christmas Bonus?
To bag the £10 Christmas bonus, you must be receiving one of the following benefits during the qualifying week—usually the first week of December:
- Armed Forces Independence Payment
- Attendance Allowance
- Carer’s Allowance
- Child Disability Payment
- Constant Attendance Allowance (Industrial Injuries or War Pensions)
- Contribution-based Employment and Support Allowance (after 13 weeks)
- Disability Living Allowance
- Incapacity Benefit (long-term rate)
- Industrial Death Benefit (widows/widowers)
- Mobility Supplement
- Pension Credit (guaranteed element)
- Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
- State Pension (including Graduated Retirement Benefit)
- Severe Disablement Allowance (protected)
- Unemployability Supplement or Allowance
- War Disablement Pension at State Pension age
- War Widow’s Pension
- Widowed Mother’s Allowance
- Widowed Parent’s Allowance
- Widow’s Pension
Plus, recipients must live in the UK, Channel Islands, Isle of Man, Gibraltar, Switzerland, or another European Economic Area (EEA) country.
When and How Will You Get Your Christmas Bonus?
No need to apply. The DWP pays the Christmas bonus automatically before Christmas, straight into your usual benefits bank account. Watch for the payment labelled “DWP XB” or something similar on your bank statement during the festive season.
More Cash: The £300 Cost-of-Living Payment
In addition to the Christmas cash, the DWP is rolling out a £300 cost-of-living payment on October 31. It’s the second of three instalments worth up to £900 this year for those on means-tested benefits like Universal Credit, Pension Credit, or tax credits.
HMRC will pay £300 to individuals claiming only tax credits who miss out on DWP payments. These payments are scheduled between November 10 and 19.
Here’s the best bit: these payments are tax-free, won’t affect your benefit cap, and won’t reduce your other benefits. To qualify, you must have been entitled to a qualifying benefit or tax credits for at least one day between August 18 and September 17.
Winter Relief for Millions
The DWP’s Christmas bonus and cost-of-living payments are designed to help millions of UK households weather the rising cost pressures this winter. Even a small boost like this can make a big difference during the tough months ahead.
