Eastbourne RNLI Save Kayaker and Paddleboarder Swept Out to Sea
The Eastbourne RNLI volunteer crew sprang into action at 1 pm today, answering their 61st emergency call of the year after a Coastguard alert.
Quick-Thinking Caller Triggers Dramatic Rescue
A member of the public in Normans Bay spotted a kayaker and paddleboarder drifting dangerously offshore, caught by a sudden breeze. They didn’t hesitate to dial 999, alerting the authorities before attempting a rescue themselves.
“The first informant acted admirably by promptly dialling 999 and alerting the coastguard, providing crucial information about the location of the individuals in distress and refraining from attempting a rescue themselves.” – RNLI Spokesperson
Volunteer Crew Launches Lifeboat to Bring Them Home Safe
The RNLI team immediately launched their Inshore D Class 123 lifeboat, ready to call in the All-Weather Lifeboat “Esme Anderson” if needed. Once on scene, they carefully plotted the safest route back, successfully bringing both victims ashore at Normans Bay.
Reunited with their families and greeted by local coastguard rescue teams, the rescued were safe and well thanks to the swift action of the RNLI crew and the public’s quick alert.
Crew Ready for Their Next Call
After the rescue, the volunteers returned to their station, washed down the lifeboat, and prepared for the next emergency.
