WW2 Bomb Sparks Major Incident in Great Yarmouth
Emergency services in Norfolk have declared a major incident after a suspected World War Two bomb was found in Great Yarmouth earlier today (Tuesday 7 January 2023).
400m Evacuation Zone and Road Closures
Army bomb disposal experts are on site, with a 400-metre cordon blocking off the area. Residents inside the zone have been told to evacuate immediately as a safety precaution.
Several roads remain shut, including:
- Southtown Road (junction with Tollgate Road to Beccles Road)
- Partial closures on Litchfield Road and Boundary Road (off Southtown Road)
- Complete closures on Williams Adam Way and Tollgate Road (off Southtown Road)
The cordon is expected to stay in place for at least 24 hours, causing disruption into Wednesday morning.
Help Centres Opened for Evacuated Residents
Two rest centres have been set up to assist displaced residents:
- St George’s Theatre, King Street, Great Yarmouth
- Mesh – Shrublands Youth and Adult Centre, Magdalen Way, Gorleston
Local officers and council staff are visiting homes to check on vulnerable people and offer assistance.

Chief Inspector Matt Dyson said: “Our priority will always be the safety of the public. We’re working closely with army experts to manage the cordon and resolve the incident safely.
We appreciate the disruption this causes but public safety must come first. Restrictions will remain overnight and into tomorrow.”
