Crash Chaos Closes Busy Croydon Road
A serious two-car crash slammed the brakes on one of Croydon’s busiest roads last Saturday. Police shut down a mile-long stretch of the A23 Purley Way from the morning well into the afternoon, causing major disruption.
High-Speed Smash Near Trojan Way
The collision involved a Toyota Auris and a Lexus LC 500 just after 8.30am near the Trojan Way junction. Both drivers were rushed to hospital, sparking emergency chaos on the scene.
Critical Injuries and Dramatic Rescue
- A man in his 50s driving the Toyota suffered critical injuries and remains in hospital.
- The Lexus driver, a man in his 40s, sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
- Firefighters cut the roof off the Toyota to free the trapped driver.
- The Lexus had its airbags deployed in the smash.
Met Police confirmed: “At around 08.30hrs on Saturday, April 26, two cars collided on Purley Way at Trojan Way. One driver was taken to hospital in critical condition; the other also hospitalised but injuries are not serious.”
Gridlock and Store Silence as Road Stays Shut
The northbound lanes between Mill Lane and Commerce Way stayed closed into the afternoon. The closure sparked massive tailbacks from Fiveways all the way to Waddon New Road and Croydon Road. Drivers stuck in jams were left confused, with some diverted into dead-end streets like Mill Lane, watched over by police.
Meanwhile, shoppers at Purley Cross retail park noticed the eerie quiet, with empty stores and no queues — a rare sight for the usually buzzing spot.
Police Issue Urgent Witness Call
Authorities want anyone who saw the crash or has dashcam footage to step forward. Witnesses can contact police on 101, quoting reference CAD 1807/26APR25.
