Godalming, Surrey, May 8, 2017: Cameras roll on the gripping new adaptation of Howard’s End, spotlighting the fierce social and class divides of early 20th century England. Matthew Macfadyen Takes Centre Stage

Playing the formidable Henry Wilcox is none other than Matthew Macfadyen, whose star power is soaring. Recent and upcoming roles include The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, alongside Keira Knightley, and The Current War with Benedict Cumberbatch.

From Norfolk to the Spotlight

Born in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, Macfadyen is the son of drama teacher and actress Meinir Owen and oil executive Martin Macfadyen. With Scottish and Welsh roots, he spent parts of his childhood in Indonesia due to his dad’s career before returning to the UK to pursue drama.

He secured a spot at RADA in 1992 and earned rave reviews in the 1990s for his work with the acclaimed theatre company Cheek By Jowl. His television debut came in Wuthering Heights (1998), followed by a steady stream of roles.

TV Breakthrough and Personal Life

Macfadyen’s breakthrough came as Tom Quinn, head of Section D, in the hit BBC series MI-5 (2002). It not only launched his career but also his personal life – he met his wife, Keeley Hawes, while filming.

He cemented his global fame with his portrayal of Mr Darcy in the 2005 adaptation of Pride & Prejudice. Now, with Howard’s End, Macfadyen is back in prime form, bringing early 20th-century England’s social tensions vividly to life.
