Gosport MP Caroline Dinenage Champions Volunteering for Disabled Youth
Gosport MP Caroline Dinenage has thrown her weight behind the expansion of a life-changing volunteering scheme for young disabled people across the UK.
‘Can Do’ Scheme Boosts Disabled Youth Volunteering
Leonard Cheshire Disability’s ‘Can Do’ programme offers exciting chances for disabled youngsters aged 10 to 35 to volunteer in their communities. Since its launch in 2008, over 6,000 young disabled people have taken part. With the scheme now active in 18 regions, its impact keeps growing.
Parliament Reception Celebrates Volunteers and Supporters
The expansion marked a special Parliament reception where Caroline met star volunteers, including 1,000 disabled young people thriving through workshops, community projects, and mentoring schemes this year alone.
“I was delighted to meet two really inspiring young people from our local area, Carrieanne from Portsmouth and Connor from Gosport,” said Caroline. “It was great to hear about the skills they’d learned and how volunteering has made a real difference to them. Not only does it boost confidence and skills, but their work truly benefits local communities.”
“I hope many more will get in touch with Leonard Cheshire to volunteer.”
Volunteers Share Impact Stories
Among the event’s speakers was 26-year-old Felix Labwo, who has Asperger’s Syndrome. Felix praised the scheme’s positive effect on his life.
“I would recommend Can Do to anyone looking to develop themselves or wanting to make a contribution to their community. Can Do helped my communication skills, and gave me drive and motivation.”
Leonard Cheshire CEO Hails Collective Effort
Leonard Cheshire’s Chief Executive Neil Heslop urged MPs to support the scheme’s growth.
“I am delighted so many people have joined us in celebrating the many ways we all ‘Can Do’ together.”
Can Do projects also benefit vulnerable groups like the homeless and refugees. For those eager to get involved, visit www.leonardcheshire.org for more details.
