£6m Boost for Families Fighting for Vulnerable Kids’ Guardianship

The government has announced a £6 million cash injection to help up to 2,000 more people in complex family legal battles. The move extends legal aid to friends and family seeking to become special guardians of vulnerable children.

Legal Aid Now Covers More Guardianship Cases

From today, family members and close friends applying for Special Guardianship Orders (SGOs) can get free legal advice and representation. SGOs allow children to be placed in stable, loving homes with extended family, friends, or foster parents until they turn 18.

These cases are often tough and emotionally draining. The funding will ease the financial burden, making it easier for carers to secure legal support during private law hearings.

Legal Help Also for Parents Opposing Guardianship

The new funding doesn’t just help carers. Parents opposing SGOs in private law cases will also get free legal representation, ensuring they receive fair advice and support.

Justice Minister: ‘Families Deserve Vital Support’

“Providing a stable, loving home for a vulnerable child in need is an utterly selfless act and it is right we provide families with the vital support they need – particularly in the most complex and emotive cases,” said Justice Minister Lord Bellamy.

“We are investing millions every year to make sure criminal and civil legal aid reaches those who need it most.”

Part of Wider Legal Aid Overhaul

Before this, legal aid for SGOs was only granted if the local authority was involved. Now, private law cases are included, broadening access significantly.

The government is also rolling out other legal aid improvements:

  • Standardised testing for birth parents involved in adoption cases
  • An extra £10 million annually for housing legal aid, helping thousands facing eviction

This latest funding boost aims to protect vulnerable kids and support families navigating the tricky legal maze.
