Father and Son Plucked from Perilous Cliff at Thornwick Bay
A dad and his young son faced a heart-stopping ordeal after getting stranded halfway up a cliff at Thornwick Bay, Flamborough. The dramatic rescue unfolded just after midday today when the boy’s mother dialled 999, panic-stricken that her son and his father were stuck about 40 metres up the cliff face.
Cliff Climb Turns Dangerous
The youngster had dared to climb the cliff, but when he got into trouble, his father tried to save him – only to get trapped himself. Bridlington Coastguard Rescue Team rushed to the scene and found the pair clinging precariously to the sheer rock face.
Dramatic Helicopter Winch Rescue
With no time to lose, the HM Coastguard’s Humberside-based search and rescue helicopter was scrambled. The crew winched the father and son to safety at the top of the cliff. Miraculously, neither suffered any injuries. They were later handed vital safety advice by the rescue team.
Jamie Stafford, Maritime Operations Officer, warned: “The UK’s coastlines are perfect for exploring, especially during the Easter holidays. But climbing cliffs is dangerous. Don’t risk it unless you’re trained and properly equipped.”
“Don’t use cliffs as shortcuts, and if you spot someone stuck, don’t try to rescue them yourself – you could end up needing rescue too.”
“Enjoy our stunning coastline, but stay safe and get home in one piece. If you see anyone in trouble or get into difficulty yourself, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.”
If You See Someone in Trouble
Always alert the Coastguard immediately by calling 999. Cliff rescues are risky. Leave it to the pros.
