Blaze on the Isle of Wight sparks fire crew scramble

Firefighters race to Queens Road bonfire scare

Retained firefighters from the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service were scrambled just after 7pm tonight following reports of a fire in Queens Road, Shanklin.

Contractors left bonfire unattended

On arrival, the five-strong crew found contractors had been carrying out a controlled burn inside a hotel’s grounds. Trouble struck when the bonfire was left unattended, sparking fears of an out-of-control blaze.

Quick action puts out potentially dangerous flames

The team swiftly deployed a high-pressure hose jet to douse the flames and safely extinguish the large fire. Contractors returned to find their bonfire fully put out, thanks to the firefighters’ rapid response.
