Major Blaze Rips Through Heathrow Electrical Substation

Firefighters remain locked in battle with smouldering hotspots after a massive fire tore through a high voltage electrical substation near Heathrow Airport late on March 20. The blaze knocked out power and sparked chaos at one of the world’s busiest airports.

Fire Brigade Confirms No Suspicious Activity

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) has brought the fire under control but is still on site monitoring the electrical equipment. Initially investigated by the Metropolitan Police due to the critical infrastructure impact, the probe has now been handed back to the Fire Brigade after police ruled out foul play.

Over 212 emergency calls flooded in during the incident, which involved a transformer housing 25,000 litres of highly flammable cooling oil. LFB crews deployed 10 fire engines, two Bulk Foam Units, and a High Volume Pump, with around 70 firefighters battling the inferno under hazardous conditions.

Safety Cordons and Evacuations

  • A 200-metre safety cordon was put in place.
  • 29 residents evacuated from nearby homes.
  • 150 people temporarily housed in a rest centre as a precaution.

Deputy Commissioner Jonathan Smith praised the frontline teams, saying:

“Our firefighters worked tirelessly in challenging and hazardous conditions overnight to bring the fire under control as swiftly as possible. I thank all firefighters and Control officers for their courage and professionalism during very difficult circumstances.”

Investigation Underway — Airport Disrupted

LFB Fire Investigation Officers, backed by scientific advisors, are probing the exact cause. Fire Safety Officers are also reviewing compliance with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. The Brigade will maintain a presence to stamp out any lingering hotspots.

The fire sent shockwaves through Heathrow, forcing cancellation or delays of over 1,350 flights and causing massive disruption to passengers and airlines alike. The incident has raised urgent questions about the resilience of national critical infrastructure.
