Blaze Rips Through Thamesmead Terrace

A fierce fire erupted on Cole Close in Thamesmead this afternoon, engulfing several homes and causing chaos in the neighbourhood.

Firefighters Battle Huge Blaze

The London Fire Brigade scrambled four fire engines and 25 firefighters from Plumstead, Erith, and East Greenwich stations. They answered around 10 emergency calls, tackling the fire from 1:37pm until it was finally snuffed out at 3:43pm.

Homes and Structures Heavily Damaged

  • Two houses suffered damage to ground and first floors, plus fascia and soffits.
  • A third property’s conservatory, part of its first floor, and soffits were hit.
  • The fourth house had its fascia and soffits scorched.
  • Two sheds, a pergola, and a row of fencing also went up in flames.

Fire crews safely removed and cooled two gas cylinders at the scene, preventing any potential explosions.

Injuries and Safety Warnings

One person was hospitalised with smoke inhalation, while another was checked on site and released.

Investigators say the blaze started accidentally from burning rubbish. Windy, dry weather fanned the flames, causing the fire to spread rapidly and cause serious damage.

Fire Brigade Urges Caution

A London Fire Brigade spokesman warned:

“Fires involving rubbish, especially in dry and windy weather, can spread rapidly and cause significant damage. We urge the public to be cautious and report any signs of fire immediately.”

Local Residents Speak Out

Neighbour Jenna Wright said:

“It was terrifying to see how quickly the fire spread. One minute it was just smoke, then it engulfed the houses. I’m just grateful the firefighters got it under control.”

Paul Maddox added:

“The wind really didn’t help. It felt like the fire was jumping from one house to another. It’s a relief no one was seriously hurt.”
