Fire Tears Through Newport Flats as Smoke Chokes West Street
A fierce fire ripped through a block of flats in Newport this Wednesday afternoon, sparking chaos and causing major disruption.
Six Fire Engines Battle Blaze
The blaze broke out just after 4pm on West Street, prompting an urgent call to Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue. Six fire appliances plus an aerial ladder platform rushed to the scene. Crews from Newport, Cowes, Ryde, and East Cowes worked quickly to tackle the fierce flames licking the roof of the building.
Smoke and Flames Pour From Roof
Shoppers and flat residents flooded emergency services with frantic calls as thick smoke billowed out, trailing over the multi-dwelling property. A spokeswoman confirmed the roof was “well alight” with firefighters expected to remain on site for some time.
Bus Routes Diverted Amid Fire
Southern Vectis announced bus services on routes 7 and 38 have been diverted while crews continue to battle the blaze, causing headaches for commuters in the area.
Cause Under Investigation, No Injuries Reported
Thankfully, no injuries have been reported. Fire officials suspect the fire could be electrical in origin but are continuing their investigation.
“We were called just after 4pm to a property fire in West Street. The roof is well alight and fire crews are expected to stay for some time,” said an Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue spokeswoman.
