Blaze Back on Salisbury Plain After Army Live Firing Sparks New Fire
The Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service is on high alert again as a huge grass fire has reignited on Salisbury Plain. This comes just days after army live ammunition exercises resumed, despite firefighters only just quelling the blaze after two weeks of battling flames.
Firefighters Held Back by Live Firing Zone
The fire service revealed they cannot directly tackle the blaze because it lies within a live firing range. Their role is limited to preventing the fire from escaping the restricted impact zone. Aircraft water drops are off the table due to strict safety rules governing the area.
MOD Defends Handling of Blaze
A Ministry of Defence spokesperson said: “The fire is well within the impact zone. Fire wardens are monitoring the site closely. If flames spread beyond the designated area, the Fire and Rescue Service will step in.”
They added: “We understand the smoke causes inconvenience, but the fire doesn’t threaten property. The MOD takes safety seriously and is doing everything to minimise risks to military personnel and the public.”
Health Warnings for Locals Amid Thick Smoke
Public Health England has urged residents affected by the smoke to stay indoors with windows and doors closed. Those driving through smoky areas are advised to keep windows shut and use air conditioning set to recirculate air.
People venturing outside should avoid smoky spots or limit their exposure. Officials warn smoke irritates the lungs, skin, and eyes, causing coughing, wheezing, and chest pain. Asthma sufferers should carry inhalers and seek medical advice if symptoms worsen.
Residents are urged to be cautious as the situation remains volatile.
