Rising Danger of E-Bike Fires – Experts Urge Caution
- Experts warn against buying cheap e-bikes or scooters online and advise only using compatible chargers.
- London Fire Brigade data reveals they attend an average of one fire every two days linked to overheating lithium batteries.
- Since 2020, there have been at least eight deaths and over 190 injuries from electric bike and scooter fires.
Giuseppe Capanna, product safety engineer at Electrical Safety First, explained the risks:
“Substandard e-vehicles can have damaged batteries, increasing fire risk. These batteries store massive energy in tiny spaces, separated by just a thin layer. If crushed or pierced, they can explode.”
