Fire Service Issues Warning on E-Bike and Scooter Safety

Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue’s investigation concluded that an e-bike charging at the time was the probable cause of the fire. Area Commander Stuart Smith warned, “E-bikes and e-scooters are popular, but users must beware of battery risks. Follow simple safety steps to reduce overheating and fire hazards.”

Rising Danger of E-Bike Fires – Experts Urge Caution

  • Experts warn against buying cheap e-bikes or scooters online and advise only using compatible chargers.
  • London Fire Brigade data reveals they attend an average of one fire every two days linked to overheating lithium batteries.
  • Since 2020, there have been at least eight deaths and over 190 injuries from electric bike and scooter fires.

Giuseppe Capanna, product safety engineer at Electrical Safety First, explained the risks:

“Substandard e-vehicles can have damaged batteries, increasing fire risk. These batteries store massive energy in tiny spaces, separated by just a thin layer. If crushed or pierced, they can explode.”
