Smoke on the Roof Sparks Fire Drama in Old Basing
A sharp-eyed bakery team member raised the alarm after spotting smoke billowing from a roof in Old Basing, triggering a swift evacuation of the building.
Firefighters Rush In as Blaze Hits Roof
Fire crews from Basingstoke, Rushmoor, Hartley Wintney, Andover, and Eastleigh raced to the scene just before 3pm. They found the roof blazing fiercely and doused the flames using four hose reels and an aerial ladder.
Thankfully, no injuries were reported but the fire caused serious damage to the roof and part of the first floor.
Solar Panels to Blame, Says Fire Chief
Station Manager Simon Forster, leading the operation, said: “It’s believed the fire was caused by solar panels on the roof.”
He also paid tribute to The Street Bakeshop for staying open to help: “Our thanks go to The Street Bakeshop who saw the smoke and rushed over. They let us use their facilities during the incident.”
Bakeshop Team Praised for Quick Thinking
Owner Tim Goodwin praised his staff’s bravery: “Two of my team, Jared and Emily, spotted smoke and rushed to make sure the owner’s daughter was safely out. Sonia and Natalia stayed on, keeping the shop open for firefighters. I’m really proud of my team.”
By 5pm, crews began salvaging belongings and tackling hot spots. The all-clear came shortly after 6.30pm, with only two fire engines and the aerial ladder left at the scene.
