Six Berkshire Firefighters Test Positive for COVID-19
Six firefighters from Tilehurst and Whitley Wood fire stations have tested positive for COVID-19. All are now recovering safely at home in isolation.
The Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service is keeping their identities and conditions private to protect their privacy.
Mass Testing and Contact Tracing Underway
A source from the service confirmed that every staff member at the two stations is being tested. Contact tracing is in full swing with support from Public Health England.
All fire stations are thoroughly cleaned and sanitised between shift changes to keep infection risks low.
“One of my highest priorities is the safety and health of all the employees,” said a spokesperson. “We follow and exceed government guidelines wherever possible while continuing to provide essential emergency services to our community.”
Social Distancing and Operational Changes Implemented
- Staff numbers at the two stations have been reduced to enable social distancing.
- Fire engines are now manned by just four crew members.
- Some stations remain closed except for emergencies.
- Training sessions are held separately to avoid group mixing.
- Emergency response protocols have been adjusted to reduce contact.
Despite the changes and positive cases, the source stressed that public service will not be interrupted.
The fire service has been approached for further comment.
