Huge Blaze Tears Through Derelict Debenhams in Canterbury
A massive fire ripped through the abandoned former Debenhams store on Canterbury’s High Street on the evening of December 2. Thick smoke plumed over the city, triggering a major emergency response and forcing scores of nearby residents to evacuate.
Inferno Erupts at Old Debenhams
The fire erupted around 8:30 PM, sending clouds of thick smoke visible for miles. Witnesses reported a swarm of fire engines and emergency crews rushing to the scene. Kent Fire and Rescue Service assistant director Neil Griffiths called it a “significant” incident.
“About 50 firefighters, eight engines and specialist kit battled the blaze,” said Griffiths. “The building’s old, unstable structure with voids made putting out the fire tough. Our teams arrived within four minutes which helped stop the flames spreading to Canterbury’s precious historic buildings.”
Evacuations and Rescue Efforts
- About 30 residents from nine surrounding flats were evacuated for safety.
- One person treated for smoke inhalation by paramedics on site.
- Canterbury City Council set up a welfare centre to provide shelter, warmth and support through the night.
Road Closures and Safety Alerts
Emergency crews cordoned off Guildhall Street and nearby roads to manage the scene. Residents and local businesses were told to keep windows and doors shut amid heavy smoke, though this has now been lifted. Most streets reopened, but Guildhall Street remains closed for cleanup and investigation.
Cause of Fire Still Unknown
Kent Police confirmed investigations have started once firefighters fully secure the site. “The cause hasn’t been confirmed yet,” said a spokesperson. “We’re working closely with fire services to keep the area safe.” Firefighters continue damping down hotspots.
Derelict Debenhams: A Local Headache
The store has sat empty since Debenhams folded in 2020. Plans to transform the site into 12 shops and 74 flats as part of the £25 million Guildhall Quarter project have stalled due to environmental concerns over water pollution near Stodmarsh Nature Reserve. Locals fed up with the building’s abandoned state say the fire highlights urgent need for action.
Community Cheers Fire Response
Residents and business owners have praised firefighters and council staff for their quick response. Social media is buzzing with relief that Canterbury’s historic heart was spared from serious damage.
The fire service continues to monitor the scene with further updates expected as investigations progress.
