Major Blaze Hits Phoenix Hotel Near North Weald

Firefighters battled a huge fire at the Phoenix Hotel off the A414 near North Weald Bassett. The blaze erupted late Friday night on Epping Road at around 9:05 pm, triggering a massive emergency response.

Swift Evacuation and Firefighting Efforts

Ten fire crews slammed into action, deploying an Aerial Ladder Platform, a water bowser, a drone, and an Incident Command Unit. Essex Fire and Rescue officers rushed to the scene to tackle the flames. All guests and staff were evacuated quickly with no injuries reported.

Area Manager Dan Partridge said: “We are grateful the building was evacuated so efficiently, and no-one suffered any injuries. I would like to praise crews for their hard work in getting the fire under control so quickly. I also thank our crews and partner agencies who supported those affected by relocating them to alternative accommodation.”

Fire Under Control, But Epping Road Still Closed

The fire engulfed roughly 25% of the hotel but was fully extinguished by 1:30 am Saturday. Fire crews have since stood down, although some remain to monitor the site. However, a section of Epping Road remains shut as investigations continue. Drivers are urged to avoid the area and follow diversion signs.

Cause of Fire Under Investigation

Officials plan to launch a full investigation into the cause of the fire later today. Firefighters and investigators will be working together to figure out how the blaze started.

Support for Displaced Guests and Staff

Essex Fire and Rescue and partner agencies are helping those affected by the blaze, providing temporary accommodation and support. The quick, coordinated emergency response prevented further damage and kept everyone safe.
