Doncaster Man Jailed for Nearly a Decade Over Brutal Attack
A Doncaster man has been jailed for nine and a half years after brutally beating a woman, leaving her with a fractured skull and a bleed on the brain.
Violent Assault in Early Morning Hours
Mark O’Flanagan, 46, woke his neighbour in Hazel Avenue, Auckley, in the early hours of 16 October 2019, banging on their window and shouting, “She’s dead, phone an ambulance.” The victim, a 45-year-old woman, had just suffered a savage attack while O’Flanagan was under the influence of drink and drugs. The assault left her bleeding heavily and barely conscious.
Lengthy Sentence and Tough Licence Conditions
After initially refusing to comment, O’Flanagan pleaded guilty to Section 18 wounding. Today, Sheffield Crown Court sentenced him to nine years and six months in prison. He will also serve a five-year extended licence period, aimed at protecting the public from serious harm.
Police Praise Victim’s Strength and Warn on Domestic Abuse
Detective Constable Della O’Horo from Doncaster CID said: “O’Flanagan’s ferocious and senseless attack left the victim requiring months of medical treatment. She may never fully remember what happened but I hope knowing her attacker is behind bars helps her move forward.”
Detective Inspector Anna Sedgwick added: “The victim has been incredibly strong. I hope the long sentence gives her some peace. This case sends a clear message – domestic abuse will not be tolerated in Doncaster or South Yorkshire.”
Judge Condemns Attack’s Lasting Impact
Her Honour Judge Sarah Wright told O’Flanagan: “Your brutality caused physical and psychological harm. She will live with this, physically and cognitively, for the rest of her life. You have blighted the lives of others forever.”
