The UK is set to launch its first-ever British passports featuring the title “His Majesty” – but the King won’t be getting one himself.

Historic Change for British Passports

For over 70 years, British passports have proudly worn the phrase “Her Majesty,” a nod to Queen Elizabeth II’s long reign. Now, for the first time since 1952, passports will bear “His Majesty,” marking a major royal shift since King George VI’s era.

Why the King Doesn’t Need a Passport

Despite this switch, King Charles III will not carry a passport. It’s old news that sovereigns don’t need these travel documents. He used to have one as Prince of Wales, but now, as monarch, passports are issued in his name – making one for him pointless.

Government Hails a New Era

Home Secretary Suella Braverman said, “For 70 years, Her Majesty has adorned British passports, and many of us cannot recall a time when she did not feature. Today marks a significant moment in UK history as the first British passports since 1952 will bear the title of His Majesty, the King.”

Slow Rollout to Avoid Waste

The first page of the new passports will boast the Royal Arms and the words:

“His Britannic Majesty’s Secretary of State requests and requires in the name of His Majesty all those whom it may concern to allow the bearer to pass freely without let or hindrance, and to afford the bearer such assistance and protection as may be necessary.”

The change won’t happen overnight. Old “Her Majesty” passports will be used up first, just like Royal Mail is still using stamps featuring the late Queen. This cautious approach respects the King’s call to avoid unnecessary waste.
