Chaos at Gatwick: Flights Cancelled and Delayed Amid Staffing Shortages and Bad Weather
Passengers Left Stranded as Flights Cancelled
Travel misery hit Gatwick Airport on Sunday 8th September 2024. Airlines scrambled to cancel or delay flights thanks to a perfect storm of air-traffic control staff shortages and brutal weather across the UK and Europe. The disruptions wreaked havoc on passengers flying in and out of the busy airport.
easyJet Slams Air Traffic Control Shortage
easyJet blasted the situation, blaming NATS for staffing shortages in Gatwick’s air-traffic control tower. A spokesperson said, “NATS air-traffic control staffing shortages at Gatwick led to a significantly reduced flow rate being imposed on all airlines today, which is resulting in flights to and from Gatwick airport being subject to disruption, including some cancellations. We are extremely disappointed that customers are once again being impacted by this, and while this is outside of our control, we are sorry for the inconvenience caused.”
easyJet confirmed it was doing everything possible to ease pain for stranded travellers, offering rebooking options, refunds, hotel stays, and meals where needed.
Other Airlines Also Grounded
- British Airways cancelled evening flights to Bordeaux and Jersey.
- Vueling axed 16 flights, mainly to Spain.
- Norwegian stopped services to Bergen, Copenhagen, and Stavanger.
- Wizz Air grounded flights to Vienna and Venice.
The combination of staffing issues and poor weather left airlines battling delays and cancellations all day.
Passengers Entitled to Compensation
A Gatwick Airport spokesperson explained: “Due to short-notice absence in the air-traffic control tower, temporary restrictions have been put in place today, in addition to existing restrictions in place due to adverse weather across the UK and Europe. These may result in some delays and cancellations.”
Passengers stuck at Gatwick are entitled to compensation, including meals, hotel accommodation, and rebooking rights under air passengers’ protection laws. However, the turmoil spells costly challenges for airlines navigating logistics and payouts.
Travellers are urged to check directly with their airlines for the latest updates and travel advice as the disruption continues.
