A savage snowstorm has slammed york/">New York City, dumping six inches of snow and sparking havoc on the busiest travel weekend of the year. Thousands of flights have been cancelled, leaving travellers stranded and chaos gripping the Northeast.
Flight Chaos: Thousands Cancelled
Friday night alone saw 1,500 flights scrapped across the Northeast. By Saturday morning, cancellations nationwide soared to 14,000. NYC’s big three airports – JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark Liberty – slapped down severe travel warnings as the storm roared in.
Travel bosses are urging passengers to prepare for major disruptions and avoid driving if possible amid treacherous road conditions.
State of Emergency Hits Half the State
New York Governor Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency across half the state. She warned residents to “monitor local forecasts and avoid unnecessary travel.”
“If you have to travel, plan ahead, take it slow, and leave plenty of time to get to where you need to go safely,” Hochul said.
Next door in New Jersey, Governor Tahesha Way echoed the warnings, urging people to stay off dangerous roads and remain indoors during the storm.
NYC Grit and Gumption Keep City Moving
Never one to back down, New York Mayor Eric Adams tweeted with typical city steel:
“A little bit of that white stuff doesn’t slow down New York City. Thank you to @NYCSanitation, @nycemergencymgmt and all our agencies working hard before and during this storm. Make sure you shovel your sidewalk to keep our city moving safely!”
Despite the icy chaos, visitors like Payton Baker and Kolby Gray made the most of their anniversary, praising city workers for hustling to clear roads despite the surprise cold snap.
Aftermath and Ongoing Threats
Though snowfall eased on Saturday, forecasters warn of lingering flurries, power outages, and downed trees. Maryland-based forecaster Bob Oravec said the blizzard is calming but dangers remain.
New York’s last major snow blast was back in 2022, when eight inches crippled the city.
